The devil is merely another name for the wild man. The devil is merely archetype of wild free nature. Neither of these two ideas by themselves is the enemy, it is unmaintained wild nature which is the enemy. It is unrealized wild nature that is the enemy. The devil never was the enemy, the devil was a form of self that needs to be self realized and kept in check.
